about

Recorded live on an answering machine at the benefit for Chris Rigsbee. There is a fair amount of crowd noise on the recording but I think it's worth a listen.

Team Grease, Leo Brill, Joey Todd and Adrian Aardvark also performed.

A pretty unique setlist. This is the only time I've played either of the covers live, as well as the song Devil. I think this is also the first time I played Brothers out.

The tape cuts out when Painting is almost over.

about

From the Southern Tier to the North Country, Peter House sings about traveling, community, philosophers in fistfights and Pennsylvania, and calls it all "country songs" even though most of them are only vaguely of that genre. Now living in Rochester, NY. ... more

Track Name: Devil > Brothers
I am caught tumbling earthwards, I am falling from the sky
I landed on the sidewalk, caught a leaf in my eye
Pick myself up, keep on moving, gotta walk on down the line
I'm going to meet the Devil on a clear autumn night

Got the rush of adventure, a hint of fear of hell
I'm like the Goodman Brown, I'm under the Devil's spell
The one I whisper to myself alone under lamplight
Says I'm gonna meet the Devil on a night like tonight

Got no heaven above me, got no faith down below
Got no world around me, even doubt I got a soul
I just know I've got a body and it's walkin' down the line
It's going to meet the Devil on a clear autumn night

When I sing I look skywards like the answer's up there
I don't believe it is although it could be in the air
Like a leaf tumbling earthward from dead branches in the sky
Reaching down to grab me and carry me to the Devil tonight

Got the rush of adventure, a hint of fear of hell
I'm like the Goodman Brown, I'm under the Devil's spell
But if I cannot make it, if the walk proves too far
I'll conjure up the image of a demon with my guitar

------

One was tame, one was wild
Brothers Cain and Able style
But I wasn't able, I wasn't Able
And I sure as hell weren't Cain
Look so different in that picture
One is truth, one is fiction
Versions of each other or versions of the truth

* Find yourself in the eyes of your brothers
Find your face in the kind of another

Look so different in that picture
One is truth, one is fiction
One was tame, one was wild
Brothers Cain and Able style
But I wasn't Able and I wasn't Cain
Or my brother under a different name
One lived east, one lived west
Tattoos cover the other's chest
And one was drunk, the other stoned
But neither was himself anymore

*

One lived east, one lived west
Tattoos cover the other's chest
And one lived in peace, one lived in war
Neither knew what the hell the other did the other - for
Different times, different conclusions
Different lives, different solutions
